A Utility Room Tale

Unfinished utility room
My utility room has been a work in progress for longer than I want to admit. This spring I moved the garden and I knew I wanted to get my upright freezer repaired and back in use. The freezer part was the easy part. My son, Joe, and his housemate, Sean, identified the problem,
and Sean replaced the motherboard in the freezer for me. The REAL problem was making space for the freezer to come home. It used to live in my south room, but I turned that space into a closet. The only other spot was in the utility room. I did not want to bring something as large as a freezer into the space until the room was finished. It has been sitting with unfinished sheet rock for years.

My green thumb
\The first job was to move things so we could do the taping and bedding. Texture wasn't needed because I planned to use paintable wallpaper.  It looks so easy in the photo, but for a 76-year-old granny, it required a lot more stretching and bending than I was used to. Leon visited a lot and was a big help on the spots I could not reach. (Note to others: Always pick a tall boyfriend. :) )

Before the wallpaper went in, I needed to paint the ceiling. Joe suggested I use a roller on an extension to do the ceiling, but I wasn't coordinated enough to make that work. Instead I climbed the ladder and used a shorter roller to do the ceiling.   Next came the wallpaper. It went fairly easily, although I found that some was self-stick and some was not. I didn't want to mess with the non-self-stick variety, so a trip to Menard's found me enough to finish the project.
North wall finished

Leon's expertise came in on the next step: Wainscoating. We cut it to fit the room, and then he had to find a way to fit it around the doggie door. After that he had to cut the trim and woodwork for me. He did a beautiful job.

Once the doors were painted, we declared the room complete. The freezer is home.  I'm ecstatic!
